Why are charities like shelters and food pantries struggling?

Lately, the news has been doing a fair amount of stories about people in the United States having trouble paying for basics like food, that donations are down, and demand has doubled. I just don’t understand why healthcare is not free and people are worrying about food in such a wealthy country. I contrast this news with the news about A-Rod walking out on the Yankees because he wanted to be paid even more than his ridiculous salary, wanting a $300 million contract, and the Yankees caved to his demands after warning him they would not if he walked. Also, there was another story about a restaurant in NYC that had a dessert on the menu with edible gold flakes that is sold for $25,000. Is it me or is this Country’s priorities screwed up?

Because of the Bush administrations terrible economic policies that make the rich richer at the expense of everyone else, so people do not have enough to give as much as they used to.
