how come it costs money to view your credit score and report?

I don’t understand why the government won’t let you view that for free
how about services like www.freecreditreport.com?

You can view it for free. Depending on your state you can get it once a year some are twice a year. If you have been denied for credit you can also request a free copy. Credit score however is not for free. To get your free copy you need to go to each individual credit reporting agency’s site and request your free annual one. NOT that free annual junk they advertise only to try to sell you something.
